Is a prehistoric fish from the sturgeon family. It is an euryhaline catadromous fish, which allows it to survive in fresh water and salt water. In Europe its territory is the coastal waters of the Atlantic, from Spain to Norway and sporadically in the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. The species can reach more than four meters in length and weigh more than 300 kilograms. The sturgeon has a distinct shape and smooth skin marked by five rows of bony plates. Sturgeons also have barbels which they use to locate their prey. They feed on crustaceans, larvae and molluscs. Today, sturgeon populations are very vulnerable. The greatest threat comes from pollution and changes and obstructions of rivers. Several countries have started projects for the conservation of the species' natural habitats.
