Is a prehistoric fish of the sturgeon family. It is a catadromous euryhaline fish, which allows it to survive in both fresh and salt water. In Europe its range is the coastal waters of the Atlantic, from Spain to Norway, and sporadically in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. The species can reach more than four meters in length and weigh over 300 kilograms. The sturgeon has a distinctive shape and smooth skin marked by five rows of bony scutes. Sturgeons also have barbels which they use to locate their prey. It feeds on crustaceans, larvae and mollusks. Today, sturgeon populations are very vulnerable. The greatest threat comes from pollution and from changes and obstructions to rivers. Several countries have begun projects to conserve the species' natural habitats.
