The Pastenague ray, or Kuhl's ray, is a member of the Dasyatidae family. It is found in the coastal waters of the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific where the species prefers shallow sandy waters where it can easily hide. Pastenagues feed on small fish, crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp, molluscs and small fish. The species has a very characteristic olive-green body dotted with blue and two venomous barbs on the anterior part of the tail. Although the venom of the Blue Spotted ray is not fatal to humans, it is certainly very painful. It is a popular species among aquarium enthusiasts because of its beautiful coloring, but it is not easy to keep in captivity.
