the i-dc4 digital control, an exclusive of shimano, integrates seamlessly into the compact body of the slx dc. the modes are as follows: mode 1 designed to achieve maximum distance (less magnetic braking). mode 2 specifically designed for braid. mode 3 for fluorocarbon. mode 4 offers maximum control (the greatest amount of magnetic braking) for applications like skipping. once set, the onboard microcomputer, which powers itself by generating its own electricity, does all the work, leaving you to aim and cast.

how to choose your shimano slx reel

size 151 or 71?
the 71 are mainly used for light fishing: black bass, perch and zander primarily, or pike with lures that don't pull too much and are under 45 gr.
the 151 size is a classic casting reel recommended for fishing with lures from about 20 to 80 grams.

slx a 151 : entry-level model with a vbs spool setting (weight setting).

slx a 71 : first model in the range with svs adjustment (weights + external adjustment from 1 to 6). this technology allows finer tuning. it also benefits from the light mgl iii spool.

slx dc 71 : entry-level dc in size 71, digital control technology (digital brake to avoid backlashes and cast further), with the idc4 processor.

some models are also available in hg and xg versions, this indicates the gear ratio of retrieval: you retrieve more line per handle turn with an hg, and even more with an xg. a high ratio is ideal for fishing that leaves slack in the action (upstream casting / jerks) but conversely they are less comfortable with lures that resist retrieval (spinner, crank etc.).
