The wormy squirmy is a fly pattern that originates from the United States and is based on a relatively new material made of an incredibly stretchable rubbery substance. The material is thick, heavy, available in a wide range of colors and wriggles in an extremely enticing way. You'll struggle to find a worm imitation as realistic or effective as the squirmy. Some people think that, but it's really just an obese bloodworm imitation.
On a good day, it's a really effective pattern to try. The Squirmy worm was originally used on rivers in the United States for brown trout and rainbow trout. It's just as deadly here, and it's an extremely effective pattern for grayling on rivers, especially in pink and red, if the water is clear or stained. It's great for big perch and roach too. Cast it upstream and retrieve the line as the worm comes back to you in the current and you'll probably hook up sooner or later. On rivers, I find it works better with a bead to help the material sink a bit better, which also seems to slightly improve the action.
