In Japan, shore-based GT fishing from rocky shorelines during expeditions isn't as simple as consistently encountering a fish. Any angler who has practiced this type of fishing will confirm that. However, the aura that emanates from these fish once you have one in your hands is extraordinary and it's hard to let go of. You then try to optimize that encounter, but the difficulty and charm of this fishery lie precisely in the fact that things don't always go as planned. However, a closer analysis of this fish's characteristics reveals a clue: the GT is a kind of scad (horse mackerel).
This summer, I took on the challenge of filming shore-based GT fishing from the rocky shores of the Southwest islands for the program « STAY HUNGRY » on Fishing Vision. Carrying out such a shoot in Japan is somewhat risky and rather stressful. Yet I felt a strange optimism: if we fished as usual, we would have a good chance of success.
This confidence was no doubt fueled by the proven reliability and effectiveness of this technique and this lure. In the end, it was a resounding success: five strikes and two catches in three days. Four of those strikes were obtained with the 'FZR188SS', and the fact that almost all of the strikes occurred at the end of the season confirms its effectiveness.
Just because a lure is sinking doesn't mean you should let it sink completely. This dogtooth tuna was caught by casting and starting the retrieve immediately, with small twitches from time to time, like with a minnow.
Attract the fish's attention by retrieving the lure after it has touched the water, then switch to a tight retrieve just before reaching the rocky shore or a current. You can also continue to attract them by alternating descent phases and retrieves after the lure has touched the water, then speed up the retrieve when you cross a strong current to explore different areas. The FZR188SS is a lure that behaves like a soft bait, like one you might use for fishing for the horse mackerel 'AJI', and you can add some flavor to it depending on the angler's strategy and how it is worked.
