the atlantic salmon is the most noble of the salmonid representatives (salmonidae). the geographic distribution of the species in europe includes the waters from scandinavia to northern portugal. the salmon spends most of its life in salt water but returns to the place where it was born in rivers. a certain percentage of salmon die after this migration, exhausted by the journey. the salmon is a true predator. the young specimens feed on insects, larvae and invertebrates and the adults hunt other fish. today, european salmon populations are very vulnerable. the greatest threat comes from pollution and the alteration and obstruction of rivers.
