They are used to measure and reproduce exactly the same casting distance, allowing every feeder cage or method feeder to be placed in the same spot. They are pushed into the ground behind you, the line is wrapped until the desired distance is reached, and then clipped. Some models offer features such as reinforced points for hard ground.
