The Muskie (Maskinonge) is the largest member of the pike family (Esocidae) and can reach some 65 to 70 pounds. The species is found mainly in Canada and in the temperate waters of the northern United States. They are green-silver to olive in color, with a dark back and darker spots or vertical bars on the flanks. Muskies have 6-9 sensory receptor pores on the underside of their jaws (pike have 4-5) and have a forked, pointed caudal fin rather than a rounded one. Maskinonges feed primarily on fish, but they also attack and eat ducks and water birds, amphibians and rodents. Pike and Muskie hybrids are called Tiger Muskies.
