the roach is a small member of the cyprinid family (commonly known as the carp family). growing to around 30 cm, it is found in lakes, rivers, ponds and brackish waters of europe and asia. the species has a characteristically short silvery body with red eyes and unmistakable red caudal fins. often found in small shoals, roaches feed mainly on plant material and small insects, larvae and gastropods. it is a very wary and shy species and a preferred snack of predatory fish.
