seahorses are small fish of the family syngnathidae that inhabit temperate and tropical waters worldwide. the name comes from the Greek hippos (horse) and kampos (marine fish). seahorses prefer calm environments and peaceful conditions. they are often found in mangroves and among marine vegetation in shallow waters. it is the males that carry out the gestation, which lasts between 9 and 45 days, depending on the species. there are about 54 species of seahorses but many of them are threatened with extinction.
