derived from the Latin for “sardine” and “shape” the fishes of the order clupeiformes include very widespread species, such as herrings, the sardine and the anchovy. often living in large schools, fishes of this order typically have a silvery body with a dark back and a fusiform body. most species feed on plankton and other tiny marine invertebrates. the majority of the fishes in the order clupeiformes are pelagic species found in most of the world's oceans and seas. some species, however, are anadromous or live in freshwater like the shad.
