Plaice are a group of flatfish species in the family Pleuronectidae. They are demersal fish, which gives them their characteristic flattened body shape and one-sided appearance. The plaice can hide and camouflage itself quickly, thanks to its ability to change color and to bury itself in the sand. They are nocturnal predators, feeding mainly on small marine organisms. The plaice is invariably associated with the waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, where it is an important part of commercial fishing and local culture.
