the dolphinfish, mahi-mahi, or dorado is a popular pelagic fish of the family coryphaenidae. it is found in all the world's tropical and subtropical waters and is particularly abundant in the indo-pacific, the caribbean and the gulf of mexico. it is characterized by its beautiful coloration and its large, very distinctive head. the species feeds mainly on small fish, squid and small invertebrates and crustaceans. coryphaenids are prized by anglers for their raw power (the name is derived from hawaiian for 'very strong') and are very popular fish among chefs.
